ADVANCED PLACEMENT

In an A.P. Program, students pursue college level work in high school classes in preparation for A.P. exams. Those who receive satisfactory scores on these exams are eligible for college credit and promotion into higher-level classes upon entering college.  Placement in AP courses is based on grades, GPA and CST scores; students will be required to apply for entry into these classes.

ENGLISH

ENGLISH 3: AP LANGUAGE

PREREQUISITE:  CST SCORE OF PROFICIENT OR HIGHER OR, STUDENTS MUST HAVE MAINTAINED A 3.0 OR ABOVE IN THE PREVIOUS YEAR’S ENGLISH CLASS.  EACH STUDENT MUST SIGN A CONTRACT, WRITE AN ESSAY, AND COMPLETE SUMMER WORK BY THE FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL.

Students will study the principles of rhetoric and interpretation in preparation for the AP exam in Lang. and Composition that the student is expected to take.  Students will write extensively in a variety of domains.  Students can expect to be an active participant in class and to work independently on reading and writing assignments outside of class

ENGLISH 4: AP LITERATURE

PREREQUISITE:  CST SCORE OF PROFICIENT OR HIGHER OR, STUDENTS MUST HAVE MAINTAINED A 3.0 OR ABOVE IN THE PREVIOUS YEAR’S ENGLISH CLASS.  EACH STUDENT MUST SIGN A CONTRACT, WRITE AN ESSAY, AND COMPLETE SUMMER WORK BY THE FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL.

This course includes a thorough study of world literature with an emphasis on interpretation, in preparation for the AP exam in Literature and Composition. Students can expect a rigorous schedule of required readings.  Students will write extensively in a variety of domains.  Students can expect to be an active participant in class and to work independently on reading and writing assignments outside of class.    This course fulfills the entire senior year English requirement.

FOREIGN LANGUAGE

Spanish 3 A.P.  A/B

PREREQUISITE:  "B" OR BETTER IN SPANISH 2.

One major objective of this course is to prepare students for the AP exam given in May.  A passing score in the AP exam will allow students to receive college credits at most universities in the United States.   Students will demonstrate a heightened awareness of culturally appropriate behavior.

MATHEMATICS

CALCULUS 1 A.P.  A/B

PREREQUISITE:  MATH ANALYSIS OR TRIGONOMETRY WITH “C” OR BETTER, AND CONSENT OF INSTRUCTOR

This year course is equivalent to the first semester of college calculus.
 

SOCIAL STUDIES

EUROPEAN HISTORY 1 A.P.

PREREQUISITE:  BASED ON CST SCORE TEACHER RECOMMENDATION

The A.P. program in European history is designed to develop an understanding of modern European history, an awareness of Europe’s changing position in the world and an ability to analyze historical evidence.

U.S. HISTORY 1 A.P.

PREREQUISITE:  WORLD HISTORY 1, EUROPEAN HISTORY 1 A.P.

The A.P. class in U.S. History 1 will provide the student with a learning experience equivalent to most college introductory American history courses.  The course will emphasize political history, foreign affairs, economic and social development, and literary/cultural history. 

GOVERNMENT 1 A.P.

PREREQUISITE:  SENIOR STANDING OR TEACHER   RECOMMENDATION

This one-semester course will give students an analytical perspective on government and politics in the United States. This course includes both the study of general concepts used to interpret U.S. politics and the analysis of specific examples. It also requires familiarity with the various institutions, groups, beliefs, and ideas that constitute U.S. politics.
